Investing in smarter equipment to keep Jersey flowing
For Bellpumps & Drains, keeping Jersey's drainage and wastewater systems running smoothly is an essential part of everyday life on the Island. From clearing blocked drains and cleaning sewage pits to helping prevent flooding during periods of severe weather, the business provides services that support homes, businesses and communities across Jersey.
When a key piece of equipment reached the end of its working life, Bellpumps saw an opportunity not just to replace it, but to transform the way the business operates.
Replacing ageing equipment
The company's existing jet vac tanker, originally manufactured in 2005, had become increasingly expensive to maintain and less efficient to operate. Frequent repairs, downtime and limited capacity were affecting productivity and requiring additional vehicles and crew members to complete certain jobs.
With support from the Better Business Grant, Bellpumps invested in a modern jet vac tanker designed to deliver greater capacity, improved reliability and enhanced operational efficiency.
A step change in productivity
The new vehicle has transformed day-to-day operations. What previously required multiple vehicles and larger teams can now often be completed with a single vehicle and fewer staff, reducing costs and improving efficiency.
Its larger capacity means fewer trips to unload waste, while improved jetting and suction performance allows jobs to be completed more quickly. The business is also benefitting from reduced fuel consumption, simpler scheduling and less time spent on the road.
For the team, the benefits have been immediate. The modern vehicle is easier to operate, more reliable and better suited to meeting the demands of the business.
Supporting the wider community
The investment is delivering benefits beyond the business itself.
The enhanced capabilities of the tanker enable Bellpumps to respond more effectively to drainage issues and environmental challenges across the Island. During periods of heavy rainfall, the vehicle has already helped protect estates from flooding and support essential infrastructure when it is needed most.
The new tanker is also more environmentally efficient, reducing water use, fuel consumption and the need for additional vehicle movements.
Looking to the future
Bellpumps & Drains' investment demonstrates how modern equipment can help businesses improve productivity, increase resilience and deliver better outcomes for customers.
By investing in technology that enables the team to work smarter and more efficiently, the business has strengthened its ability to provide essential services for years to come. The result is a stronger, more sustainable operation that continues to play an important role in supporting Jersey's communities and infrastructure.
"It's changed our efficiency. Instead of doing two or three trips to unload, you can do it in one or one-and-a-half. You're burning less diesel, spending less time on the roads and it's made scheduling easier."
