A day in the life of a Jersey entrepreneur – Andy Delaney

Andy Delaney, Chief Executive Officer, TSG Technology Services

What makes you spring out of bed in the morning?

A sense of purpose! I love mornings and I do literally spring out of bed when the alarm goes off. That drive and excitement of a new day, knowing that every day I can make a difference to someone or something and empower them to be a more productive and efficient version of themselves.

What does your normal day look like?

The alarm goes off at 6.45am and is then followed by an hour and a half of family fun getting everybody all set for the day ahead. The daily ritual of waking our 8-year-old up with copious impressions and games, sets the day up nicely. Once at the office there is never a typical day, each day usually presents itself with new opportunities, client engagements and the unavoidable challenges. Working collaboratively, we embrace the day and thrive on providing a positive and engaging end to end customer experience. I usually leave the office around 7 so I can get home to help in the evening family wind down time.

How did you get to where you are today?

Two things … 1) Having a dream and 2) Self believe. Once I understood my ‘Why’, which is ‘to provide technology led solutions, empowering people to deliver more effective and streamlined business outcomes’. Then all I had to do was to find the ‘How’. From my early 20’s, I focused on technology being the core component to my personnel development, building experience across all different technology disciplines and as a result I surrounded myself with amazing, talented and positive people. This provided me the confidence to navigate the complex world of IT and to now be able to deliver the innovation and creative business technology services that we do today.

What couldn’t you live your life without?

Quite honestly my family, they are my inspiration. My wife is my rock, my pillar of support. My daughter is my hero, always filled with positivity and curiosity. I love that children always ask ‘why?’, take a moment next time they ask you ‘why?’, really think about your answer.

Which outsiders (professional services, investors, mentors, family etc.) have been most important to the success of your business?

Friends have been key influencers, especially those who work outside of the technology business. Their insight and view of ‘Digital’ has helped me significantly and, by putting myself in their shoes has helped me see how IT is (or in their view isn’t) an enabler to them. In addition, there have been a handful of people that have helped shape my business career, from providing simple advice as “be a sponge and gain as much information from people as you can”, to an inspiring business owner who gave me the clarity and confidence to believe in myself and to dare to dream. Most importantly though are the people that have shown me (without knowing) what not to do things like: the lack of manners, respect and dignity. Not knowing how to support their team, provide leadership and recognise talent those are the people that have been most important as it’s because of them that I now know what to do right.

What have been the biggest challenges you’ve had to overcome?

Finding my ‘Why’, my ’Purpose’ … what is it that gets you to jump (or spring) out of bed in the morning. This took me 20 years to find, I knew it was there I just couldn’t channel it. For me my outlook changed overnight, once I understand and realised how I could add value to the world we live in. My journey is nowhere near complete, every day I am learning, I have so much more to offer and each day I am inspired to deliver positivity to any situation and find new ways to empower people and the environment they work in.

What advice would you give to your younger self before embarking on your business journey?

Just do it! Don’t wait for the right time, don’t wait for the stars to align and don’t wait till you’ve got the experience. Believe in yourself! If your going to fail, then fail fast and move on. Give 100% and be the best at what you do!
