Locally born Jamie is an experienced luxury goods sales consultant and Dustin who is from Australia was formerly a sustainability adviser and an experienced barista.
Jamie and Dustin were seeking permission to own and operate a business in Jersey and therefore needed to apply to The Population Office for a business licence to trade. This required them to put together and submit a detailed business and financial plan for their request to be considered.
The next step was to find a suitable premises to operate the business from. A busy location with good footfall and an affordable rental were key to healthy sales and low overheads if the business was to operate profitably. This would inevitably involve entering into negotiations with agents and landlords.
Not having previously owned or run a business in Jersey, the formalities of incorporation, licences, planning permissions and Health and Safety requirements were all unknown territory and had to be investigated and applied for where necessary.
June Stead, Business Advisor at Jersey Business says ‘Dustin worked diligently and with determined focus to put together an excellent, thoroughly well researched plan which clearly explained exactly how their new venture was going to work, both financially and practically.’
The plan was presented to the Population Office and resulted in Jamie and Dustin being granted their licence to trade.
After nail biting negotiations (another business was after the same shop!), they managed to secure a suitably sized town premises at an affordable rental. The premises were stylishly re-furbished to a high standard with most of the work being completed by the guys themselves.
In late July, Dandy Coffee Shop opened its doors to the public. The name ‘Dandy’ represents the first bull to be registered in the Jersey Herd Book in 1866. Top quality milk is equally as important as quality coffee and Jersey milk is synonymous with local produce, quality and heritage.
The business is thriving and they continue to plan, develop and research especially in relation to operations, sustainability and the different types of food dishes they might offer. They have already added an employee to the team. Customer loyalty is building along with their reputation for exceptional coffee and customer service as backed up by top reviews on Trip Advisor.
